Industrial school
In 1925, Chemnitz had approximately 9,000 vocational school students and a growing need for schools due to urban growth. In 1928, what was then Germany's largest and most modern vocational school was inaugurated. It was designed by Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock. The striking red brick building with Art Deco stylistic elements features the facade sculpture “Der gefesselte Deutsche” (The Bound German) by Heinrich Brenner. Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock was born in Marienwerder in 1883 and died in Essen in 1961. He was Chemnitz's city councilor for construction until 1925, then worked as a freelance architect. He also designed the substation on Getreidemarkt, which is now a youth hostel.
