German Federal Bank
The German Federal Bank branch in Chemnitz was designed by internationally renowned Spanish architect Joseph Lluís Mateo. It opened in 2004. The exterior design is striking for its simple, aesthetic form, which, when viewed from the front, resembles an upside-down T. The natural materials used were sourced primarily from the region. The building envelope is made of sandstone blocks, and the extravagant, translucent glass façade facing Zschopauer Straße was originally intended to be backed with alabaster. A reverse glass print now reproduces the stone structure well. Various objects are particularly striking in the interior design. One is the vertical wooden wall made of oak boards in the entrance hall, manufactured by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. On the other hand, there is the deep red ceiling painting “Watermelon Cut – Ceiling Dance” by Czech artist Petr Kvícala on the first floor. In the Capital of Culture year 2025, the Chemnitz branch will be showing two special exhibitions: Money Through the Ages and Nature and Structure. These can be visited during regular opening hours.
