ASB Residential Center
On the edge of the Old St. John's Cemetery, where the ASB Residential Center and the ASB Retirement and Nursing Home are located today, St. George's Hospital was established around 1885 as a church foundation.
After World War I, there was a great need for housing in Chemnitz. Single-person households, especially those with elderly people, were to be moved out if possible. In 1924, this led to the initiative to build a municipal retirement home incorporating the hospital. The construction was supervised by city planning officer Fred Otto, also known as the architect of the Chemnitz municipal baths. In 1931, the ultra-modern facility opened with single and double rooms, contemporary sanitary facilities, a bowling alley, and a ballroom. The green surroundings of the park at the Old St. John's Cemetery made the retirement home particularly inviting. After 1945, war damage was repaired through renovations and new construction. Finally, in 1990, the retirement and nursing home was taken over by the ASB Ortsverband Chemnitz und Umgebung e. V. and completely modernized in the following years.
Furthermore, the local association became the sponsor of the ASB residential center, which was officially opened on May 1, 1999. Here, physically disabled people aged 18 and over who require care have the opportunity to live together in residential groups according to a concept of self-determined living. There are various learning and participatory activities on offer, such as computer work, ceramics and theater groups, and a woodworking workshop. Participation in the cultural life of the city and in various civic projects is also strongly encouraged.
Today, the "René Krönert Memorial" commemorates the co-founder of the residential center. René Krönert himself was one of the first residents of the house. The stele of the ginkgo leaf made of Corten steel was erected in front of the house on the 15th anniversary of the residential center. The design is by Frank Heim. René Krönert had already passed away at that time.
