The Love Nest
Right in front of the theater's entrance door stands a bronze sculpture by Volker Beier called The Love Nest. It was created in 1978 and then installed as part of the redesign of the sculpture park for the theater's reopening in 1980. It is one of a group of four bronze sculptures located directly in front of the theater. The Love Nest was stolen in 2016 and therefore recast. The artist Volker Beier was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR. He was born in Chemnitz in 1943 and died in 2023. He began working as a freelancer in 1967 and later became a master student at the academies of arts in Moscow and Berlin. His diverse art can be seen in many cities, both in Germany and abroad. In Chemnitz itself, the following works of art by him can still be seen: the Agricola tribute on the steps next to the former municipal utility building, the memorial stele for the destroyed synagogue on Stephansplatz, and the inscription “Proletarians of all countries, unite” on Brückenstraße, which he designed together with Heinz Schumann.

The figure is easily accessible directly on the plateau in front of the entrance to the former theater. The sculpture is located on a pedestal that is about one meter fifty high. The sculpture itself is slightly larger than a human head.
It depicts a love scene. Only the upper bodies of a young woman and a young man are visible. The couple is sitting upright in a bed. The couple's arms are wrapped around each other. Both are unclothed. They are wrapped in large sheets that almost completely cover the bed and dominate the overall picture. The back of the bed is much higher than the footboard. Viewed from the front, the woman is on the left. She has a slight smile on her face and her eyes are closed. She has medium-length, slightly wavy hair with bangs. Her face is round. The man's face is close to the woman's left cheek. He has short, wavy hair. He appears youthful.
