Georgius Agricola High School

Today's Georgius Agricola High School was formerly the Realgymnasium (secondary school) at the Old St. John's Cemetery. The striking red brick building was inaugurated in 1929. The architectural style corresponds to that of classical modernism. The architect was Emil Ebert. Many striking details characterize the exterior façade, such as the portal and door designs by Bruno Ziegler. Figures of young men by Heinrich Brenner can be seen on the façade. There is also an observatory dome that resembles a ridge turret. The staircase design inside is by Kurt Feuerriegel. Also noteworthy is the auditorium with stained glass windows by Alfred Bielenberg and a Jehmlich organ. Today, the high school is named after the polymath Georgius Agricola, who was mayor of Chemnitz around 1550.
